Words in the Sky: Submissions

A community writing project inspired by The Red Balloon
Jersey Arts Centre

What does a balloon mean to you?

Is it a symbol of joy, of freedom, of childhood, or of letting go?

Does it remind you of a celebration, a loss, a wish – or simply the beauty of colour against a grey sky?

Words in the Sky invites writers, poets, dreamers, and first-time scribblers to respond to this simple, universal image. Your words might come from a memory, a story, a feeling, or just a single thought that drifts across your mind.

You can submit:

  • A short poem, verse, or haiku
  • A paragraph of prose or reflection
  • A short story (max. 200 words)
  • A single line or fragment – sometimes a few words say everything

Submissions are open to everyone – children, adults, schools, families, and community groups. You don’t have to be a writer to take part; you just need an imagination and a few spare minutes.

Selected pieces will feature in the Words in the Sky exhibition at Jersey Arts Centre, (6 December – 3 January) appearing as part of a shared sky of language – a gallery of floating words inspired by The Red Balloon and created by our community.

Deadline: 5pm on Wednesday 26 November
