By Eve Ensler
The Vagina Monologues, written by playwright Eve Ensler, broke ground in 1994, offering to the world a piece of art like nothing it had seen before. It shares stories that can resonate with everyone, based on interviews with more than 200 women. With humour and grace, the piece celebrates women’s strength and addresses the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twenty years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public. Jersey’s recent publication of the Violence Against Women and Girls Task Force Report and the Government’s commitment to the subsequent 77 recommendations makes this a very topical play for Jersey. Several of JADC’s amazing actresses will perform monologues and choral work as they explore the comical highs and the emotional lows in the stories about our female anatomy!
