This is an exciting new illustrated lecture course with Courtauld Institute of Art graduate Lisa Oxenden-Wray B.A (Hons), PG Dip.
First looking at the development of Modern Art from the early 1900’s in France with Cezanne, Picasso and their contemporaries, to Abstraction and Surrealism with Kandinsky, Malevich, Duchamp, Leger, Magritte, Mondrian and Dali.
Then looking at Post War (WW2) Modern American Art with Jackson Pollock, Edward Hopper, Warhol and Pop artists, followed by the Young British Artists including Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. Then you’ll move on to the New York City artist Basquiat and Neo-Expressionism movement, finishing with the illusive artist Banksy.
Presented over 2 weeks, this course shows some of the greatest artworks of the 20th Century in their historical context. With explanation of their meaning with reference to cultural and intellectual aspects and the shifts of power influencing these artists, such as the effects of two World Wars and the economical state of their countries.
