The programme opens with music by great composers – a set of dramatic and beautiful Schubert songs with a watery theme – including Die Forelle, Der Wanderer, and Das Fischer Madchen followed by masterpieces by Vaughan Williams and Samuel Barber – Sure on this Shining Night.
The second half opens with a set of songs by Bernstein – best known for West Side Story before the second half takes flight with folksongs O Waly Waly, the spiritual Deep River, some fun Copland songs I Bought Me A Cat, before finishing with Jerome Kern’s classic Ol’ Man River.
This remarkable programme is sung by legend Sir Willard White who is a regular at the great opera houses around the world from La Scala to the Metropolitan New York and of course the Royal Opera House. A Grammy award winner for his recording of Porgy and Bess, he has made countless recordings which are the pick of all interpretations and performs with the finest orchestras from the Berlin Philharmonic to the London Symphony Orchestra. In November 2023, he was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion D’honneur – the highest order of the French order of Merit.
