Smugglers and Friends
Over the years, Andrew Thompson’s main artistic interest has been the portrayal of people – both the human figure and portraiture.
His previous exhibitions have always focused on seascapes and beachscapes, but the human figure has always been the major element in the paintings.
This is Andrew’s first solo exhibition for many years and marks a departure from his usual beach scenes. This new show consists entirely of portraits. The idea for the exhibition came when he was having a drink at his local pub, the Smugglers Inn – hence the title – ‘Smugglers and Friends’. He was surrounded by all sorts of interesting characters, anyone of whom would make an ideal subject for a painting.
They were soon press-ganged into sitting for him. He has also taken the liberty of including a few friends and members of his family who aren’t necessarily locals.
